The Internship Stigma: A Graduate Insight

When I first graduated (October 2014) my initial thought was anxiety, where have the last three years gone? Who threw me in the time capsule that sent me forward three years? It’s a feeling of excitement but also dread. All those endless nights in the library working towards a degree and five months later I’m stuck as a waitress, applying for any job involving the word ‘marketing’ and refusing to budge when my parents told me that I’m being ‘unrealistic’. After a few failed interviews due to ‘lack of experience’, I finally succumbed to the fact an internship was the only route for me to experience a career.

There is a social stigma that internships are low paid and companies can fill your day with monotonous tasks that will not develop you as a person at all. However, the first google search of ‘Internships, Cambridge’ unleashed a few unexpected surprises. Anglia Ruskin offer internships paid at £240 a week full time at reputable companies in the Cambridgeshire area. Of course I applied and two weeks later found myself sitting at a desk being given my tasks for the next three months.

If you are reading this and you are a student I would suggest getting involved at university before it’s too late. If you are reading this and you are a graduate, I am sure other universities are running these kinds of internships. If you are a business, set up a plan and get an intern in, it will be the best thing you ever do and finally if you are a HE institution, promote internships as much as you can because it can make such a massive difference to someone’s life!

For businesses, an intern will benefit your company essentially by injecting a new way of thinking into the company in a cost effective manner. After starting at Prospect Research it’s hard to understand why more companies don’t employ interns. As long as you have someone who is patient and willing to teach, the internship will benefit all fields!

I’m so grateful that I have been given an opportunity by Prospect Research to be a Marketing Executive Intern at their company. My first month has flown by but it’s been the biggest learning curve in my life to date, I can’t wait for the next couple of months to see my development in the company and also watch the company grow! I will of course, update you on my progress throughout.
